Kelly's Techie Tip of the Month

Kelly is our lead Technical Support Representative and helps our customers with a variety of questions each month. Please note that the information provided in Techie Tips is done so only as a recommendation. Any files you download onto your computer system should be done only after careful review of the provider's terms and conditions, system requirements, etc. eGIX is not responsible for any hardware or software related issues that may occur from downloading files referenced in this newsletter.

Here are some tips for securing your computer and your personal information.

Internet Safety Tips

  • Use unique passwords. Choose passwords that are impossible to guess. If you have multiple accounts try using different passwords for each of them.

  • Use Virus Protection. A virus checker or antivirus is a must! And you must keep it updated. Most Virus Programs can be set up to update automatically. For more information on virus protection, visit:
    PC-cillin Antivirus - trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm
    Norton Anti-Virus - norton.com
    McAfee Anti-virus - us.mcafee.com
    AVG Anti-Virus - grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

  • Watch for Attachments. Only open file attachments that you are expecting. Even if you recognize the sender, check with them before opening it. Emails can be sent without the sender's knowledge.

  • Watch for Suspicious Email. Don't respond to messages asking for personal information, passwords, account numbers or any other private information. Even if it appears to come from eGIX, a bank or any trusted source. Contact the sender to see if the request is legitimate. However, do NOT use the web address or phone number found in the email — only use the phone number or address on your statement!

  • Use Anti-Spyware Programs. Anti-spyware programs can scan your computer for known spyware applications and remove them. Some will continue to run in the background and alert you if you attempt to install spyware. For more information regarding spyware removal programs, visit:

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is just around the corner! To ensure this Halloween remains 'spooky', and not hazardous for both children AND parents, we have provided some helpful safety tips for you to review before the big night!

Make sure the children use the 'Buddy System". If they do not go out with you, be sure they are with someone responsible or have the older children stick together.
Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.

Treating your kids to a big dinner will make them less likely to eat the candy in one night — avoiding the dreaded 'tummy ache'.

Prepare homes for trick-or-treaters by clearing porches, lawns, and sidewalks as well as placing jack-o-lanterns away from doorways and landings.
Place lighted pumpkins away from curtains and other flammable objects, and do not leave lighted pumpkins unattended.
When trick or treating, avoid taking shortcuts across backyards or alleys. Stick to the sidewalks of well lit streets.
Only Approach houses that are well lit.
Check candy thoroughly before allowing children to eat it.
