Identity Theft Hits Close to Home
By Kelly eGIX Technical
& Customer Support Supervisor
I
recently fell victim to identity theft and the stress that
results trying to get your credit straightened out. I'm a
cautious consumer, but any time you provide credit
information—whether it's online or in person—and even though
you take the utmost security precautions, you may still fall
victim to identity theft.
I thought I'd share some
findings from my personal experience that may assist you in
keeping a close eye on your credit status as well as some
recommendations should you suspect illegal activity is taking
place with your personal information:
1. Check your
credit report at least twice per year. Check for any new
or unusual accounts that may have opened. If someone is using
your identity, you will see the red flags here. You can obtain
a credit report at:
Or for a FREE credit report, go to:
2. Place a Fraud Alert. Call all three major
credit bureaus if you suspect your identity has been stolen.
Ask that a "Fraud Alert" be placed on your file so no new
credit can be granted without your personal
approval.
Below is contact information for the three
major credit agencies:
|
TransUnion Fraud Victim Assistance
Department Phone: 800-680-7289 Fax: 714-447-6034
Equifax Consumer Fraud
Division Phone: 800-525-6285 or: 404-885-8000
Fax: 770-375-2821
Experian Experian
National Consumer Assistance Phone:
888-397-3742 |
3. Act Quickly! If you fall victim to identity
theft, you should:
-
Contact each company on your credit report you think
resulted from illegal activity.
-
Ask to speak to their fraud department and explain
what has happened.
-
Review your account with them for change of address
or incorrect charges.
-
If the account is still active, you may consider
closing the account.
-
Make sure to document ALL the information you
gather.
-
Finally, you will want to fill out The Federal Trade
Commission's Identity Theft Affidavit to assist those
companies involved in investigating the incident(s). You can
find that form at: ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/affidavit.pdf
4. File a Police Report. File an Identity Theft
Report with your local police department. Be sure you get a
copy of the report in case you need to provide anyone proof of
the crime.
5. Documentation. Ever since my
personal experience with identity theft, I make it a point to
document EVERYTHING. Where I have lived, which loans I have
taken out, who I contacted regarding my fraud problem, contact
numbers, etc. I keep this information filed in a safe place so
I will be more prepared should identity theft find me again.
I certainly hope you never have to use any of these
steps to recover from identity theft. And there may be other
steps you will need to take to rectify your particular
situation. But as reports of the crime continue to grow, I
hope to have provided you with some helpful hints and a
general course of action.
