The VoIP
Craze....
The
VoIP craze is alive and kicking in the marketplace
today. The term "VoIP" is saturating the
telecommunications world... but what does it
really mean? And how does it affect you, the
consumer?
"VoIP" is an acronym for
Voice-over Internet Protocol, better known as
Voice-over IP. To put it simply, it is not a
product in its self, rather an alternative to the
traditional method used to
deliver telephone
service. Your traditional telephone service is
delivered over the copper wires and telephone
poles that you see everyday.
Voice-over IP is, in all actuality, just
that—Voice service
delivered over the
Internet using a
specific Protocol, or,
computer language. By this method, your
traditional analog telephone service is converted
into a digital signal and delivered over your
hi-speed broadband connection, such as DSL or
Cable modem.
Not necessarily a 'new'
technology, VoIP has recently inspired the launch
of several new digital voice products that
have gained popularity within the consumer
marketplace as a result of the unique
mutual benefits for both provider and consumer.
More specifically, that it is considerably less
expensive to deliver telephone service using VoIP
technology relative to the methods of traditional
telephone service. This in turn, allows providers
the opportunity to position these new digital
products to compete directly with traditional
phone services at very competitive rates,
currently ranging anywhere from $14-40 per month,
depending on available features.
In the
end, the basic functionality of the telephone
service remains the same. You will hear the exact
same dial tone (hum) when you lift your receiver,
regardless if you have plain old telephone service
or digital phone service delivered via VoIP
technology.
The difference?
The available calling features,
associated applications and overall cost
effectiveness benefiting the consumer, as well as
the provider.
Delivering telephone service
using VoIP technology creates a unique opportunity
for providers to bundle in a variety of
cutting-edge calling features for about the same
price (if not less) than traditional phone
service.
For instance, eNCOMPASS by
eGIX is our residential VoIP dial
tone product. It bundles home telephone service,
unlimited local and long distance, voice mail,
email, all the popular line features such as Call
Waiting and Caller ID AND allows you to personally
manage and customize your features with an easy to
use Web-based dashboard — the Online Call Manager
— all for about the same price as traditional dial
tone.
In the world of telecommunications today,
the primary objective is to converge both voice
and data communications, ultimately providing one,
simple, cost effective solution that meets your
home, small business or large corporation's needs.
Whether it's the spark that ignites a telecom
revolution or just a small stepping stone in that
direction, one thing is certain... it's merely a
glimpse of what's to come.
Are YOU hip to
the craze!?

Kelly's Techie Tip of the
Month
Kelly is our lead Technical
Support Representative and helps our customers
with a variety of questions each month. Please
note that the information provided in Techie Tips
is done so only as a recommendation. Any files you
download onto your computer system should be done
only after careful review of the provider's terms
and conditions, system requirements, etc. eGIX is
not responsible for any hardware or software
related issues that may occur from downloading
files referenced in this
newsletter.
Just as
the seasons, the Internet is constantly changing
and evolving. Security threats, such as viruses, Trojans and worms, are continuously created,
destroyed, modified and reintroduced. The best way
to keep your system clean from malware is to keep you, the
user, as up-to-date and educated as possible. As
your service provider, eGIX strives to provide you
with the essential knowledge and tools necessary
to keep your system protected.
See the list below for an update of the top
malware threats circulating throughout the web
today:
JAVA_BYTEVER.A This
malware exploits the vulnerabilities of Windows
Operating Systems and Internet Explorer. This
allows malicious users to execute codes of his or
her choice when a user visits an infected
website.
HTML_NETSKY.P This
HTML malware arrives as an email with an
executable file attachment. It exploits the
vulnerabilities of Internet Explorer known as the
Automatic Execution of Embedded MIME Type. This
vulnerability causes Internet Explorer to
automatically run executable file attachments in
email messages.
WORM_SOBER.S This worm
spreads by mass-mailing copies of itself using its
own SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) engine.
It gathers its target recipients from files with
certain extension names. Notably, it avoids
sending messages to addresses that contain
specific strings.
If anything, it is important to keep your
computer and/or network safe. Investing in a
firewall and anti-virus software such as Norton Anti-Virus or Alarm Zone Free Firewall, is an
absolute must. However, it is important to
remember firewalls will not rid your computer of
any pre-existing viruses, but when paired with
anti-virus software, will provide adequate
protection against future attacks. As a rule of
thumb, it is a good idea to use an anti-virus
program to scan your system for malware
monthly.
To test the quality of your firewall, see
this month's "Ask Kelly..." question.
