Spyware slowing your computer down?
Not sure? If you've experienced a
noticeable change in your systems
download and upload speeds, there is
a very good possibility it has been
bogged down by spyware that is
circulating the Web today. "Spyware"
generally refers to computer
programs that track your online
activities. The activities that are
tracked include, Web sites you
visit, advertisement banners you
click on, and search engines you
tend to use. Spyware is generally
used by Internet advertisers to
collect data and statistics for
online Web usage. You may
unknowingly install spyware when you
download programs from the Internet,
install software from disks, or open
suspicious
email attachments. To maintain the
health and security of your system
it is a good idea to be aware of the
types of spyware out there, and take
the necessary precautions to manage
it. Provided below is a summary
describing several different types
of spyware and a listing of programs
that can help you manage it with
ease.
Types of Spyware
Trackware - tracks
your Internet browsing
Adware - displays
advertising on your computer
Trojans - software
that can allow others to control
your computer
Keyloggers - record
what you type, including passwords
Dialers - initiate
unwanted communication with other
computers
Browser Hijackers -
change your internet home or search
pages
Parasites - perform
unwanted actions

ASK
JEREMY...
Q. There are some programs
on my computer asking me to renew my
subscription with them. They all
want to charge me to renew. Are
there any free programs on the web
that would be comparable to the ones
I use everyday?
— Jackson, Indianapolis, IN
A. Yes! There are numerous free
programs available on the Web that
you may not be aware of. These days
when you purchase a computer, you
will find various programs already
pre-installed on your hard drive.
However you may also find that over
time these programs are offered for
only trial periods of time and will
eventually prompt you to subscribe
or renew your membership. Often
times you can find free programs on
the Web that provide similar if not
exactly the same benefits and
features as the expensive programs
you are prompted for or find at a
retail store. Below you will find a
list of free programs and their
"brand name" equivalents. I've also
listed some websites that make it
easy for you to search for all kinds
of
freeware,
trial-ware, and even
open source software.
